Short orientation for techs who mostly do boards but occasionally touch a customer’s Windows Server.
Roles you will meet
- File Server / Share permissions, Print Server, AD DS (domain controller), RDS, Hyper-V host.
Safe habits
- Snapshot or backup before updates or role changes.
- Prefer PowerShell remoting or RDP from a known-good admin jump box — not random public RDP.
- Keep a written note of hostname, roles, and backup product.
Common “it broke after patch” flow
1) Confirm the host actually boots and disks are healthy.
2) Check Event Viewer System/Application around the failure time.
3) Validate network, DNS, and time sync (Kerberos hates clock skew).
4) Roll back the last cumulative update only if you have a recovery plan.
NLCRC forum is fine for “what should I check next” questions — include Server version (2016/2019/2022/2025), roles, and the exact error text.
